Resources and rehabilitation processes specific to deaf and hard of hearing adolescents and working age adults. Understanding culturally diverse and underserved population issues. Identifying impact of students' own cultural experiences and identity.

PSYCHOSOCIAL IMPLICATIONS OF DEAFNESS AND HEARING LOSS FROM AN EARLY AGE (1 UNIT)

Focuses on psycho-social assessment of impact of deafness and hearing loss from an early age. Includes language and communication preferences and level, social and other developmental issues, role of cultural/linguistic history, readiness for work.

PSYCHO-SOCIAL IMPLICATIONS OF DEAFNESS AND HEARING LOSS AFTER THE
ACQUISITION OF LANGUAGE (1 UNIT)

Major communication and psychosocial differences between people with early and late onset deafness. Mental health implications, rehabilitation and social support options, vocational functioning and rehabilitation needs of persons deafened after the acquisition of language.

MENTAL HEALTH ASSESSMENT OF DEAF, DEAFENED AND HARD OF HEARING PERSONS (1 UNIT)

Mental health assessment applied to deaf, deafened, and hard of hearing individuals; implications of culture, mental status examinations, family, educational, psycho-social history, and DSM IV diagnostic criteria for vocational planning. May be repeated for a maximum of 2 units.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS IN MENTAL HEALTH ASSESSMENT OF DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING PERSONS (1 UNIT)

Focus on special conditions in mental health in mental health assessment of deaf and hard of hearing individuals such as dual diagnosis, learning disabilities, HIV/AIDS and problems with social cognition skills. Strategies for optimizing a consumer's vocational plan.

INTRO AUDIOLOGY FOR COUNS Coun 755
INTRODUCTION TO AUDIOLOGY FOR REHABILITATION COUNSELORS (1 UNIT)

Intro to audiological services for deaf, hard of hearing and deafened adults. Guidelines for referral, basic components of communication and sound, hearing mechanism, types, degrees and configurations of hearing loss,medical implications and rehabilitation services.

COUN 756 Coping Strategies: Hearing Loss and Work
(Prerequisite COUN 755)
AURAL REHABILITATION FOR COUNSELORS (1 UNIT)

Aural rehabilitation service paradigms, hearing aids, assistive listening devices, myths and realities associated with speech and reading; communication strategies for vocational settings, job site accommodations, consumer group resources, relevant legislation for vocational placement/retention. 

PSYCH TESTING DEAF/HH Coun 757 (prerequisite Coun 715 or Consent of Instructor)
PSYCHOLOGICAL TESTING OF DEAF, DEAFENED AND HARD OF HEARING PERSONS (1 UNIT)

Overview of use of testing for deaf, deafened and hard of hearing persons.   Categories of testing, appropriate referral questions, differences in testing approaches, norm grouping issues, diagnoses and "special needs deaf are included.

PSYCHOLOGICAL TESTING OF DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING PERSONS/
APPLICATIONS/CRITIQUING TEST REPORTS Coun 758, (Pre req Coun 715, Coun757) (1 UNIT)

Focus on critiquing test reports, becoming informed consumers of test reports, implementation issues regarding report recommendations, understanding test results on a practical applied level.

SUBSTANCE ABUSE DEAF/HH COUN 759
SUBSTANCE ABUSE ISSUES WHEN WORKING WITH DEAF, DEAFENED AND HARD OF HEARING PERSONS  (1 UNIT)

Assessment of chemical dependency with Deaf/HH individuals, treatment, and intervention strategies, barriers to services, unique characteristics, thecontinuum of care, drug/alcohol and HIV/AIDS education and prevention, clinical approaches, relapse prevention, self help groups, ethical considerations.

COUN 760 Deaf Culture and Mental Health (1 UNIT)

Highlights how deaf culture may affect delivery of mental health and counseling services. Participants learn to identify potential cultural influences on effective counseling process.
