Minor in Counseling
The minor offers four areas of study for all students.
The Field of Counseling. Students are introduced to the counseling profession through an overview of role and functions in career, college, marriage, family and child, mental health, and rehabilitation settings; historical perspective; professional identification; ethical considerations; and self-awareness.
Psychological Understandings. Students receive a general introduction to the field of counseling and psychological dynamics.
Decision Making. Students examine how individuals make choices and how decisions are made through self-assessment and evaluation by others. The study includes ethnic and cultural differences in the decision-making process.
Skills Training. The development of basic skills which include attending, responding, interpretation, and decision making. The training includes practicum experience in interviewing skills.

COUN 325 Career Development and Leadership (3): Prerequisite: Consent of instructor: Prepares participants to make healthy, balanced career decisions for themselves, and assist others in their career development. Includes fieldwork in the University Career Center.
COUN 326: Work and Leadership Issues of Bisexual, Lesbian, and Gays (3): Prerequisite: ENG 114: The public lives of bisexual, lesbian, and gay people are addressed within the world of work (Also offered as HMSX 326.
COUN 325 College Success Skills (3): Prerequisite: Consent of instructor: To help students learn about their own behavior; to teach students how habits are formed and can be broken. To focus particularly on self-defeating behaviors which prevent students from doing their best work in college. To share the learning of skills which can maximize the positive aspects of going to college.
COUN 695 Americans with Disabilities Act Training (3): Prerequisite: Consent of instructor: ADA's legislative history, regulations, enforcement mechanisms, technical and community resources, and advocacy techniques.
COUN 366 Introduction to Independent Living Services (3): Prerequisite: Consent of instructor: Strategies utilized in independent living centers to empower persons with disabilities; training, peer counseling, referral; accessing resources, individual systems change advocacy. Problems and strategies are viewed within social-political context
COUN 450 AIDS and People of Color in the U.S. (3, GE): Prerequisite: BIOL 327 and HED 370: The political, psychological, social, and economical impact of AIDS/HIV infection on diverse cultural backgrounds. Prevention and educational strategies.
CFS/D 430: Management Dynamics: Life Goals and Decisions (3, GE) - Needs, values, goals, standards, policies, and decision-making processes central to the dynamics of managing resources in the performance of family and professional roles. Offered alternating semesters.

SW 352 Gender, Sexism, and Social Welfare (3): Prerequisite: Upper division standing: Sex role stereotyping in the policies, practices, and organization of social welfare institutions; practice of social workers.
Mental Health Focus: Basic Counseling Skills
CFS 426 Family Crises (3, GE): Crisis and crisis intervention theories; common disruptions in family experience; new directions in solutions that re-establish family functioning.
CFS 427 Families with Alcohol/Drug Dependency and Eating Disorders (3): Prerequisite: upper division standing or consent of instructor: Patterns of victimization in families with violence, abuse, and neglect; profiles of victims and perpetrators; family relationship perspectives; inter-generational patterns of victimization. Intervention issues; services for families.
PSY 645 Group Processes (3): Prerequisites: a general introductory course in psychology and upper division standing: Practicum involving observation of interaction within the class and in outside groups, aimed at the investigation of the psychology of groups. CR/NC grading only.
Mental Health Focus: Child, Adolescent, and Family-Oriented Plan
CFS 423 Administration of Programs for Young Children (3) - Offered only in Fall semesters. Prerequisite: CFS 320 or consent of instructor: Organization, administration, development, and evaluation of programs serving young children in group settings: philosophy, program design, staffing, licensing, housing, equipment, funding, and parent involvement.

CFS 429 Divorce, Remarriage, and Stepfamilies (3, GE): Prerequisite: upper division standing or consent of instructor: Relationship perspectives in divorce, remarriage, and stepfamilies; social, economic, legal trends and issues. Role of divorce professionals.
PSY 441 The Psychology of the Family (3): The family as a psychological group; the husband-wife relationship with special attention to the dynamics of pairs; the impact of the family on personality and mental health.
SW 350 Child Welfare (3, GE): Prerequisite: Upper division standing: Child welfare as a specialized field of social welfare. Service delivery systems; the child welfare worker's job.
PSY 430 Adolescent Psychology (3, GE): Prerequisite PSY 330 or PSY 431 or consent of instructor: The physical, intellectual, emotional, and social development during adolescence.
PSY 435 Behavior Problems in Children (3): Prerequisite: PSY 330 or PSY 431 or consent of instructor: Children's behavior disorders, child guidance facilities, and clinical methods used in the study and treatment of children with problems.
