Derrick Bines
Dr. Derrick Bines is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Counseling in the College Counseling specialization. He earned his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology and M.S. in Counseling, Family, and Human Services from the University of Oregon and his Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from California State University, Fullerton. Dr. Bines completed pre- and post-doctoral training at University of California, Berkeley’s Counseling and Psychological Services.
Dr. Bines’ commitment to improving the educational experiences of marginalized students and creating inclusive academic environments is present across his professional roles. Through research, Dr. Bines explores factors that facilitate and hinder the academic experiences of Black and other marginalized students. He is interested in the impact of mentoring, experiences of discrimination, mental health, and other contextual factors on academic and vocational outcomes.
Dr. Bines has worked in community mental health agencies and in higher education including university counseling centers, advising mentoring programs, and in equity and inclusion. As a counselor, he believes in working collaboratively with clients to identify goals, personal strengths, and factors that will be helpful in managing challenges. His work is rooted in multicultural theories that consider the contexts of clients’ lived experiences.
As an instructor, his goals for students are to think critically about course content, understand the ways in which culture and identities impact development and psychological processes, and be able to apply material outside of the classroom.
